Exhibition: Face to Face with Prehistory

Face to Face with Prehistory is a new travelling exhibition (August 2025 – December 2026) that brings Belgium’s distant past to life through science and art. In collaboration with Dutch artists Kennis & Kennis, and Ulco Glimmerveen, experts from Ghent University have reconstructed the face of a Mesolithic woman from the Meuse valley using anatomical, genetic, and archaeological evidence as well as the environment in which she lived and died. This unique project blends cutting-edge research with artistic reconstruction to offer a vivid glimpse into post-Ice Age Europe.

Belgium’s Mesolithic Woman has a name now!
Mos’anne
A Mesolithic woman, discovered in Margaux Cave, lived over 10,500 years ago. Her DNA, along with that of others from the same period, is helping scientists learn more about the early genetic diversity of humans in Europe. Like Cheddar Man, the 10,500-year-old skeleton found in Britain who had dark skin, blue eyes, and curly dark hair, this woman also had blue eyes and dark hair—but her skin tone was lighter, suggesting that variation in skin colour existed before farming began and may have been influenced by factors like diet, migration, and climate. Scientists have collaborated with artists Kennis and Kennis to create a facial reconstruction of the woman, which will be displayed in museums in Belgium. As she prepares to travel to museums across the country in a stunning new facial reconstruction, we needed YOUR help.
Before she sets off, she needed a name.
